In Cairony, cairon is the transcendental ethereal holy substance that was built by Aedif out of the energy of the Primordial Chaos to organise and regulate the universe into a perfect equilibrium between the material and spiritual facets. Inner cairon is a specific subset of cairon that intimately links a person's body, residing in the material facet, with their soul, which is trapped in the spiritual facet. The principle of equivalence states that each and every point of the material and spiritual facets is linked by a unique and essential link through cairon.

Following the events of the War in the Heavenly Facets, in a time before human memory, cairon was tainted and the two facets separated, only to be connected by a much weaker link than previously. Since then, mankind's burden has been to take part in Restoration, the grand effort by which cairon will be cleaned and returned to its perfect state, fulfilling the Prophecy of the Great Bliss and re-creating the link between the facets.

Although it exists neither in the material nor spiritual facet but rather in some sort of in-between, cairon is directly affected by activities in either facet and, in a symmetrical fashion, can also influence them. From mankind's perspective, cairon is very sensitive to emotions and behaviours associated with such and can be affected positively or negatively. Negative influence can arise from both involuntary emotions, such as anger or improper conduct, including antisocial behaviour and incorrect or erroneous rituals. The accumulation of defects stemming from those negative influences will eventually affect the cairon over whole regions, which will in turn negatively influence society through self-sustaining negative feedback. Improperly performing rituals associated with cairon channeling is thus considered a serious crime within Cairan law. Conversely, positive emotions and behaviour, and correct rituals cast positive changes onto cairon, and the accumulation of such changes inducts a positive feedback loop.

The orthodox philosophy of permaterialism posits that cairon is a natural substance that obeys some laws of the material universe, whereas the more recent heterodox philosophy of paramaterialism considers cairon to be a supernatural substance that has no effect on, or is not affected by, the laws of the material universe.
