History of Savam/new ideas

  • Worldwide issues during the Siuvejas V, more pronounced economic issues in Messenia compared to OJ or Ascesia (because Messenia is not politically unified)
  • Siuvejas V end cause the collapse of the Combination of Dreams in the 1660s
  • Economic slowdown associated with the collapse in both OJ and Messenia (the latter, less bad than during Siuvejas V)
  • Neritsia collapses soon afterwards as well, almost reducing OJ-Ascesian trade to nothing
  • Messenia fars better, no collapse there, several places are mostly peaceful, so the Messenians can start to exploit the vacuum to expand both in Ascesia, Median Sea, and Serania. This eventually leads to the Heathens Wars and similar expansions in Ascesia, almost monopolising what little trade is left in the East
  • Siurs, Odann, Zep starts. Savamese join in earnest in 2nd half of the century once the Reform Wars are finished
  • In addition of securing territory in eastern Serania Major, the Messenians achieve monopoly over the Eastern Ascesian trade (via the classical route) by the end of the century. Agamar still holds the fort in Western Ascesia and actually increases its activity in the late 18th
  • 1830s Terophan (and Lacre) try to brake the Messenian monopoly but fails - this help Azophin become economically dominant in OJ through its Seranian-based wealth. Technological difference is not enough for the Joriscian to break through the "home field advantage" and pretty much all powers in Messenia are into a peaceful period at that point, with economies doing well or booming (maybe not SK) (starts of industrialisation already since the 1820s in some places). This means they have the capacity to repel the assaults easily. Joriscian shows up, attack/bombard/blockade ports in southern Messenia (and some islands) and a Messenian wide coalition forms.

NOTE - This affair may perhaps be one factor influencing the formation of the Savamese-Zepnish alliance. [And the unification of Zeppengeran as well? A naval redo of the Western Exp?]

To do as well: some modifications with regards to the new timeline of trade history re the Median Islands, essentially need to inject references to interactions with Joriscian coming from the East on the classical route. The middleman buildup thing can stay the same, since the joriscians would only be traders operating from a number of Joriscians controlled outposts or even some comptoirs in cities they don't control. Just tone down any monopoly rhetoric given that true monopoly only comes later.

Note: OJ starts to gain technological advances in the 17th century, but the collapse of Neritsia mean that they have no means of projecting power and benefit from this (small but increasing up to the 19th century) gap. Also military tech (especially naval) doesn't progress that quickly anyway. Ships of RL 1800 vs 1830 are not that much different - the Joriscians would only have paddle ships, not screw ship and not yet adopted explosive shells guns, so no immediate advantage.

Comments by Vince:

The situation in Zamorsk (the overseas colonies) is extremely unclear in the post-Neritsovid period. There's prolonged instability in Serania while they sort out which of the post-Neritsovid states the various colonies belong to, for instance that really continues right into the 19th century and if there is a Messenian defeat of Joriscian forces in that period it might have as much to do with the political fragmentation of Vaestdom as with the technological gap narrowing (which might not be enough at that point by itself).

Generally the global trade system kind of falls apart to some extent in the 18th century, the Combination of Dreams collapses pretty rapidly, which will have major knock-on consequences everywhere, and then Neritsia collapses at about the same time so Messenia is given something of a breathing space during the crucial early industrial period, which might explain why it doesn't end up being colonised lol. Without those political "externalities" OJ might have locked into exponential takeoff and done as the West did irl but that's not what happened, of course.

The combination of the dissolution of the trade leagues in 1617 and the fall of Neritsia later in the century might combine to substantially knock Joriscia out of the game in the Messenic, plus the fall of Adorac making it less attractive as a trade destination and rerouting interest to the Seranias (and east Lestria, which is the ancient stomping ground for Joriscian traders). Then Messenia can quietly take over the region in the 18th century, and perhaps fends off (partially or fully) a Joriscian challenge in the 19th. Then by the late 19th century the Great Game is fully in swing, and has been ever since, so there's no civilisational dominance one way or the other.
