Kataphia, officially the Kingdom Kataphia, sometimes refered to as Eastern Kataphia, is a landlocked country in south-eastern Messenia located in the region of Elmiesia. It borders, clockwise from the north, Ceresora, Domradovid Joriscia; Settecia, and Boehren.

Kataphia claims Boehren as part of its de jure territory, since prior to 1946 the whole area was unified under the Kataphian Kingdom. Similarly, the religious government of Boehren claims to be the legitimate government of Kataphia and thus Eastern Kataphia to be its de jure territory. The Great Powers currently support status-quo.

  • Originally single monarchic state, united some time ago (18, 19th century?) on ideas to recreate neo-messenian empire.
  • Very limited industrialisation, mostly rural society but with some mining potential as larger neighbours start to industrialise + a few well known historical mining, perhaps some precious metals/gems, that supports the royal familly's wealth. All country is very mountaineous creating a patchwork of smaller cultural groups and some local religious variations. Monarch rules from eastern valleys.
  • Religion there is Siriash's Elmiesian Rite (heavily pre-Orangism Cairony coloured Siriash)
  • Early 20th century see the rise of some new form of the Elmiesian Rite, deemed heretical by establishment. Finds itself popular with common people, steering trouble. Government starts modernising and arming to counter uprising danger (Zeppengeran and Ceresora competes to prop up local gov, with the latter having the most influence).
  • Revolution starts 1937 in the west, after several years of recurring trouble and attempts at massive purge by gov, plus terrorist activity by new cult.
  • Revolution turns into civil war, with intervention from Ceresora.
  • Stalemate in the 1940s, but beginning of Ceresoran civil war in 1943 changes thing. Wide success by revolutionaries in 1943-45, control most of country.
  • 1946: revolutionaries proclaim new state (39), claiming they will soon dispose of the monarchy still in control of east and former capital.
  • 1947: embolden 39 attacks 38, both on territorial and religious grounds. Zeppengeran (or whomeever is the protector of 38, 34 perhaps?) intervenes and push back 39's forces, forcing peace. 39's military power is seriously reduced, and fight cannot continue with 40 in the east: cease-fire is taken but no formal peace is made.
  • 1950-1960s, both 39 and 40 remain in uneasy cease-fire, building heavily fortified borders and work to modernise their economies and armies. Religious purges are common on both sides. Military junta takes power in 40, claiming the monarch is discredited by split of 39.
  • 1970s: mining boom in 40, then 39. Zeppengeran acts as stabilising influence over both countries, trying to keep peace for economic interests; by the end of decade, Ceresora returns to influence the region and fully supports 40.
  • 1980s: tension grows again, as GPs have conflict interests and 39 is swiped by renewed radicalism (new wave of young leadership). 39 supports religious expansion and anti-establishment actions in the parts of elmiesia in Domradevid Joriscia, esp. against Ceresoran influence there; its vocal support for reunification (and against Ketphor decisions) makes it some sort of pariah. Military junta continues to exercise power in 40, with a charismatic general taking power and establishing himself as life-long regent (and purging parts of the junta). Border clashes are common, 40 puts militarisation on overdrive.
  • 1991-94: full-scale war between 40 and 39, with both sides radicals having wanted it. War ends again without any victory, only minor border adjustments. Ceresora heavily supports 40. Although 40's military is strong and well equipped (it has more international support than 39), manpower is in 39's side and it's likely 39 would have won without Ceresora helping 40. GPs support return to peace.
  • Rest of 90s: 39 goes through a serios of internal trouble and economic decline as religious leaderships goes through serious infighting.
  • today: face-to-face continues (Korea style); 40 is still strongly militarised and have a lot of money from mining, but population do not benefit from it much, general still in power (figure similar to Gaddafi - sovereign is officially in power but in effect only a ceremonial figure); 39 still theocratic state, but radicals of the 90s are now gone, government is stable, and the country is trying to make openings to its neighbours, especially seeking Zeppengeran favours versus the Ceresoran influence in 40. GPs are interested in maintaining the status-quo to allow undisturbed mining.
