The Sarlhamar range is located in south-eastern Helminthasse, predominantly in the west of the commonhold of Æthelin, southern Sarevi and the north of Vinhaxa, with a smaller extension into the east of the commonhold of Helminthasse. While it is frequently thought of as only a southern extension of the larger Aphrasian mountains, the Sarlhamar contains some sizeable hills in its own right, with the Skjallarfall on the Helminthasse-Æthelin border being the highest point at 1,827 metres (5,994 feet).

The range has often been seen as a dividing point in the region; it represented the functional limit of expansion for the Larhine Empire into western Messenia for much of its existence, and the extension of influence by other neighbouring powers has been blocked to some degree by the Sarlhamar and the Aphrasians for virtually the whole existence of the Siur as a distinct people. The mountains also divide the Siur themselves into a 'Sunnian' culture of modern Siurskeyti, more influenced by other southern Messenian cultures, and a 'Vossarian' culture in Helminthasse and further north, with more affinities for the first civilisations in far western Messenia. Only the Secote invasion of the early eleventh century succeeded in overcoming the land’s natural defences.
