Quènie (Quenie is also an accepted orthography in Ellish), officially the Kingdom of Quènie, is a member state of the Savamese Empire, located in the north-west on the Quenian Peninsula. It is both the second largest and most-populous of the Savamese states (each times after Dordanie), with an area of 175,331 square kilometres and a population of 36.7 million. Quènie's capital and largest city is Ysan, the fifth largest city in Savam; the state's second largest city is Vicoucy, Savam's tenth. It is the second-least densely populated of the Savamese states, notably because it is the second-most mountainous state after Benovia; however, the alluvial plains of central Quènie have population densities similar to the most densely population regions in the country, such as Occois-Garde, southern Valdenois, and Middle Gaste.

Geography

By Savamese standards, Quènie's geography is more mountainous than most other states. The Quenian Plain, where most of the population resides, is separated from the rest of Savam and the Sabamic Plain by the mountains of the Massif Cardussien and the eastern part of the Rindarian Range which, albeit not of very high elevations, form a natural barrier. Although the Massif reaches altitudes of only 850 metres above sea level, its central part has a lot of steep ridges that extend over a depth of 40 km, creating a rough terrain that is not very practicable; the Massif is also heavily forested. The Massif is bisected by three passes (in eastward order): the Sillon de Velcour, the Col aux Corbeaux, and the Passe du Mitoire. The Sabamic Plain extends northward into the coastal plain of Arcedia, which warps around the peninsula into Eastern Arcedia (in Dordanie).

Unlike the rest of Savam, Quènie's climate is predominantly oceanic, with high level of rainfall, mild winters and cool to warm summer. The state is directly exposed to winds blowing from the Arcedian Sea, which brings troughs forming further west among the unstable weather linked to the mixing of the warm X current and cold Arcedian Subpolar Gyre (as well the Y current out of the Onnech Sound). Although polar air masses regularly reach the state in winter, the sea remains ice-free, thus mitigating winter temperatures a lot. The Arcedian Subpolar Gyre carries nutrient-rich waters to the Quenian coasts, explaining the success of its fishing industry.

Economy

Quènie has a diverse economy, which distinguished itself by being less focused on agriculture compared to other realms. Although the Quenian plain has some fertile agricultural land, Quènie always had a more diversified economy with mining (a major source of copper since Antiquity), manufacturing and shipbuilding (sustained by logging). It is logical that Quènie played a leading role during the industrialisation of Savam, and remains today a leading centre of high-tech manufacturing.

So, the Quènian economy is highly diversified but more dominated by the secondary sector than other states; heavy and precision industries share the lead with mining. A large part of Savam's nuclear industry is located in Quènie, a legacy of the University of Giscours large role during the development of nuclear technology in the 1950s and 1960s. SoNCN performs most of its enrichment in Quènie (at Giscours), while SoNEN builds its naval-grade nuclear reactors there too. Transport manufacturing is also quite important in the state, notably with Heriault and Longicourt Aviation (a subsidiary of Groupe Longicourt SN), Savam's two largest private aircraft manufacturers; Heriault assembles 70% of its aircrafts on three locations in Quènie. The shipbuilding industry also remains strong in Vicoucy and Giscours. Other state's industries are paper production, telecommunications, and civil engineering.

More than 60% of Savam's fishing output comes from the state, which also dominates seafood production. Because of its geographical position, Quènie has always been the most naval-oriented of the Savamese realms. Quènians sailors and traders have historically been a major force in the Arcedian Sea (competing with the Daels) and further; Quènians merchants were always the first Savamese to open new commercial opportunities around the Medius and in Ascesia (for example with the founding of the Grande compagnie occidentale in 1549, Savam's first colonial corporation), and most famous Savamese explorers of the Seranias were Quènians. Today, Giscours is the third most significant deepwater port in Savam.

Government

Quènie is a typical modern respublican monarchy. The ruling dynasty is that of the Montalbans-Dessor, a cadet branch of the Montalbans, who has ruled over the state since the 14th century, the oldest ruling dynasty in the Savamese realms. Quènie putting its difference and long-standing hostility with Dordanie aside was instrumental in allowing the formation of the Savamese Empire.

Demographics

As a result of being separated from the rest of Savam by a natural barrier, Quènie has developed a specific cultural identity that is often opposed to the greater family of Dordano-Lacustrian cultural groups existing in the south. This cultural identity visibly expresses itself into specific architecture, cultural festivals, gastronomy, and local dialects. The Quenian people is notably known for having spoken two dialects distinct from the Dordanian one that gave rise to standardised Savamese: the Quenian dialect (also commonly referred as the Arcedian dialect) and the Gerssian dialect. Although they are still spoken natively by a certain percentage of the Quenian population, especially in rural areas, without any official status within Quènie and a Savamese monolingual education system they have been declining since the mid-20th Century.

Quènie is also where most of the Squade population in Savam resides, near the boundary with Brolangouan. The Squades are the main non-Sabamic minority group in the country, belonging to the Daelic peoples that live in north-western Messenia; their language is a recognised regional language in the administrative région of Est-Odet (Reter-Oded in Squade).
